I am very excited to announce that my first flower of the year has opened up!
Name: Paeonia tenuifolia “Rubra Plena” – Double Red Fern Leaf Peony
Bloom Date:May 24, 2015
Colour: Lipstick Red
Bloom Type: Double
The fern leaf is a unique plant with finely divided foliage. They are usually the first peonies up in spring, bloom well before the herbaceous garden peonies, and have a tendency to go dormant in mid-summer.
I bought the fern leaf on clearance for $15 and at that point I had no idea whether it was a single or double. When it came to plant in fall of 2013 I remember being unsure of whether it would survive our harsh winters as the root was quite tiny. Needless to say I am very pleased to see it bloom. Here’s the fully open flower:
Unfortunately the other bud on this plant didn’t fare so well, but I’m considering this one a victory. Thanks for looking!
