And so it begins…

After a long winter the peonies here are finally starting to wake up and the time of year that I’m always excited for is finally upon us. The emerging red peony pips are a welcome sight in my otherwise lifeless garden.

Some of the peonies planted last fall are doing far better than I could have hoped. I think this is, at least in part, a testament to the high quality roots that Canadian suppliers offer.

When the first pips emerge I take the time to apply a liquid bulb fertilizer to get the peonies off to a good start and encourage bud formation. I am really looking forward to the next few weeks as the plants take off and leaf out. Until next time!

    1. That’s great! I hope they do well for you.

In the spring I use a 5-10-5 liquid fertilizer. I’ve seen these advertised as bulb or “quick start” fertilizers. In the fall I spread a ring of compost around the peonies, making sure that none of the compost comes in contact with the crown of the root.

Thanks for the comment, and all the best in the gardening season.
